Officials - Welcome & How to Become an Official

What Do Officials Do?

Looking to further your involvement and service to the multisport community? Become a USA Triathlon Official! Officials enforce the multisport competition rules during events and foster competition that is fair and safe — through high-level customer service and providing rules education before, during, and after events. Without officials, we would not have competitive multisport.

Enforce the Rules Fairly

Apply competition rules in an equitable and consistent manner at every event.

Foster Fair & Safe Racing

Protect Athletes

Serve as Ambassadors

Represent USA Triathlon with professionalism at every event.

Provide Rules Education

Educate athletes on rules before, during, and after events.

Officials - SafeSport & Background Check

SafeSport & Background Check Requirements

Who Is Required to Comply?

Athlete safety is USA Triathlon's top priority. The U.S. Center for SafeSport requires that all USA Triathlon officials complete SafeSport training and maintain a cleared background check prior to officiating at sanctioned events.

SafeSport Training

USA Triathlon has partnered with the U.S. Center for SafeSport to provide members with training and resources to prevent and stop abuse in multisport. All officials must complete SafeSport training before officiating at sanctioned events.

Background Check

All USA Triathlon officials must submit and receive a cleared background check through USA Triathlon's screening process. Background checks are processed through NCSI and must be kept current throughout your officiating career.

If you have any questions about SafeSport or background check requirements, please email our Compliance Team at [email protected].
